Hey there!
It’s been sunny as here in Berlin lately which naturally has resulted in many a rinse of some classic golden-era rap tracks. Few genres complement a sunny dog day better.
I also recently acquired a new microphone for the levitation station at home and what better way to break it in than to kickstart the Triple Mango Morning Show once again with my darling Matt and two hours of our finest golden era tunes.
Get a feeling we’ll be sharing a new one of these every week…
I’ve also been rinsing tf out of NTS and in lieu of the usual list of recos this week I figured I’d share some of my favorite internet radio shows, mix series, and general internet gold as that’s where I’ve been digging for a lot of the music I’ve been sharing in here lately.
Also tossed in a few gorgeous records that are ripe for a Sunday afternoon spin. Hope you find a new favorite or two. 🥭🥭🥭
NTS: Straight Honey
If you’re anything like me and enjoy cooking to some buttery smooth, soulful R&B then this will be right up your alley.
Pour, stir, and sip, while you sink into her rich grooves…of tomorrow & yesterday.
For Home Use Only
‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.
This mix series came my way thanks to a couple of my favorite Aussies. A splendid collection of extended chill out mixes to melt into. I recommend starting here.
Dublab: Contact Wave w/ Chuck Soo-Hoo
Chuck’s sound has been described as endlessly cascading waves of bliss, exquisitely blossoming loops, and music for long drives at night.
Of any internet radio station that’s worthy of a monthly/yearly donation it’s Dublab. Their curation, archive, and subscriber newsletters are a gold mine for music discovery. Also suggest checking out their Elevation Through Sound show.
NTS: Tarzsa
Manchester's Tarzsa brings good vibes Soul, RnB & Jazz to the NTS airwaves once a month.
One of my favorite NTS finds this year. A bubbly radio presence that’s always a mood booster and filled with RnB, rap, and Soul slammers. We’re taking notes.
PBS: Passing Notes w/ Pjenné
From early evening soundscapes, synth and electronic oddities right through to the early morning, where dance floor confessions are revealed in the form of upbeat and percussive dance music.
PBS broadcasts on Melbourne radio but also has a deep archive of their shows online. Pjenné’s show has been a recent fav for leftfield dance music. Club to the couch vibes.
NTS: Wathéča Radio w/ Justis Brokenrope
Wathéča Radio is an offshoot of Wathéča Records, a label and archival project focused on North American indigenous artists who were often overlooked in the canons of rock, folk, and country music. Brokenrope hosts his radio shows completely in Dakhóta, the eastern dialect of the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (the seven Lakota and Dakota tribal nations), and the original language of the land he presently resides on. Anáǧoptaŋ po!
NTS might be one of the best platforms for discovering voices and curators like these. Fully hooked on Wathéča Radio as it’s been opening my eyes to so many underappreciated indigenous artists.
Black House Radio
Bringing house music home. Black House Radio is a homecoming for black DJs and black sound paying homage to the past, present, and future of house music.
Got turned on to Black House Radio thanks to them hosting Zack Fox recently for an R&B x House set. Watched about 10 of em now and not one has missed.
NTS: BRWN w/ Ahwle & Pink Siifu
Ahwlee & Pink Siifu (B. Cool-Aid) head up BRWN, exploring hip hop's varied and far-reaching experimental corners - live once a month from Los Angeles.
Another go-to for rap discoveries and an excellent kitchen companion.
Album: A Song For You - Home (2024)
50+ member vocal ensemble here in Berlin who have been doing pop up shows in parks and throughout the city this year. Got to see them last week for their album release and it was summ special. Healing music in its finest form.
Album: Peter Cat Recording Co. - Beta (2024)
Indian indie-rockers that I first heard on One Glove on NTS, then saw featured in a couple newsletters I follow. Buzzing. Apparently the’ve been around for quite a while but seem to be busting out with this gorgeous album. A blender of influences from the 60s to 2010s indie rock that I haven’t been able to put down.
Album: Panda Bear & Sonic Boom - Reset Mariachi (2024)
Panda Bear and Sonic Boom reworking their Reset EP one more time (in Spanish) with the help of Mexican mariachi band Mariachi 2000. Reckon that’s intriguing enough. Gorgeous stuff out of left field.
