Hey there!
Nick here writing to you from a particularly frosty Berlin where many of us are attempting to ‘dry out’ for various reasons, whilst permitting a reasonable amount of indulgence to cope with/complement said frost.
Curious what this mango-centric newsletter is and why it’s in your inbox seemingly out of nowhere?
I’ve been writing and sharing some form of what will be this newsletter throughout the years with friends and family via randomly inspired g-mail bursts and a beloved (questionably legal) shared Dropbox as a way to share music that I love with people that I love.
Some of you might not have heard from me in a while, some of you might have heard from me this morning.
Regardless, at one point you trusted me by sharing your email for one reason or another, and I’ve taken the liberty of adding you here, with utter disregard for das Bundesdatenschutzgesetz. Ich liebe dich.
As I continue to share music in countless group chats, social platforms, and really to anyone who will listen, it feels like the right time to spin that energy into something tangible that will not only serve as a musical journal of sorts, but also as a vehicle for music discovery, encouraging deep listening, and helping you break through the monotony of the algorithm.
With the overwhelming amount of music being fed to us daily via those algorithms and countless apps, I find myself forgetting about releases I enjoy simply due to distraction and burnout. Unless I splurge on the vinyl or support via Bandcamp, more often than not albums get lost among the slew of other releases saved on Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, (insert your app here), or a single or two is plucked to add to a playlist that serves as background music.
Where’s ↓ this energy ↓ in the digital space?
The feeling of discovering a new song or album that you can’t help but rinse to death in a day or a new artist you know a specific friend will love is the dragon I’m chasing. This is what I’ll share with you here.
Unlike most Substack newsletters, and this longwinded first edition you’re currently reading, I’ll be keeping things here nice and brief. Every other week you’ll receive a newsletter containing a mix of albums, EPs, singles, mixes, and a playlist, sometimes with a sentence or two about them, sometimes just as is - listen to this. It won’t be specific to any genre and will be a mix of new releases, underground cuts, old classics, and everything in between. Whatever is in my headphones, directly to your inbox.
Consider it a passing of the digital aux cord.
What is that going to look like? Welp, away we go for our first edition:
Album: Sonny Ism - Dad Zone (2023)
Somewhere between soft rock, downtempo, and house. Lovely album for a cold day, or a cold one. Dad zone.
Album: Spirit of Sundaze Ensemble - I (2023)
First release from the Secretsundaze side-project reimagining a selection of classic electronic tracks. Top-tier Balearic, synth-pop, Brit funk vibes. Looking forward to many more of these coming out.
Album: Alaskan Tapes - Who Tends a Garden (2023)
Lush, piano-driven ambient record that has been my go-to for winding down. Gorgeous stuff tip to tail.
EP: Suzanne Kraft - Sometimes / If I Die (2023)
Always loved anything this guy puts out but have particularly been loving the fuzzed-out, shoegaze direction he’s gone in since his early slow disco days.
Archive: Youandewan - There Is No Right Time (2016)
I’ve recommended this album to damn near everyone at this point and it’s a great intro / tone-setter for this thing. Contrary to the album title, for me, it’s up there for the perfect “anytime” album award. A mix of house, downtempo, electro, trip-hop. At home. In the mountains. On a plane. Everywhere. Anytime.
Archive: Fila Brazilia - Maim That Tune (1996)
Downtempo, chill-out classic that’s come back around this month since hearing the album closer, ‘Subtle Body’, on one of my favorite NTS Shows.
Tune: K-Lone & Wilfy D - Strawberries (2021)
Peak time sunny day soulful garage for the dead of Winter. Holding this ‘Tune’ segment for club-minded releases, mixes, and podcasts that hit just as good at home.
Tune: Patrick Holland - Third Rail (2023)
A large chunk of the electronic music I was sending around this past year would likely fall in the ‘Emotional House’ realm, or ‘Big Room Sad’. If that’s your bag, this will be too. Sunrise vibes.
The Triple Mango Morning Show
Over the past couple months I’ve been playing around with a ‘morning radio show’ of sorts with my dear friend Charles over on NK Funky. Mostly chilled-out morning music mixed with me telling you random health and history facts about mangos, but if you’re looking to poke around a bit, there’s a handful of eclectic mixes over there from myself and some friends here in Berlin. I’ll be sharing these/those here as well as we start to be a bit more active over there.
🥭 Here’s a Spotify playlist that has a taste of everything mentioned 🥭
That’s it! If you enjoyed this one, you’re all set to receive the next ones, and if you feel inclined, pass it on to family and friends if you think they’d like it.
If someone forwarded you this one and you’d like to receive the next ones, simply click the subscribe button here and you’ll be G2G.
See ya in a couple weeks for NL02!
Nick
